Unveiling ACE: How AI Technology is Making Game Characters More Realistic

NVIDIA ACE microservices equip developers with the resources necessary to build realistic non-playable characters.

Digital characters are getting a major upgrade.

Non-playable characters (NPCs) are key to video game stories, but they often become repetitive and dull, especially in expansive games with many NPCs.

This makes interactions with static NPCs stand out more negatively.

To address this, NVIDIA recently introduced Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) microservices, which help developers create more lifelike NPCs. ACE microservices enable the use of advanced AI models for creating digital avatars that can interact and talk with players in real time.

Top game developers and studios are already using ACE to enhance the personality and engagement of NPCs and digital characters in their games.

Make Your Avatars Come Alive with NVIDIA ACE
Creating NPCs begins by giving them a background and a role, which helps shape their story and ensures their dialogue fits the situation. After that, NVIDIA’s ACE tools work together to make the avatars more interactive and responsive.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Voice Input: The player’s speech is processed by NVIDIA Riva, which creates real-time, customizable AI for conversations. This technology turns basic chatbots into engaging, multilingual assistants using GPU-powered speech and translation services.
  2. Speech Recognition: Riva’s automatic speech recognition (ASR) accurately transcribes what the player says in real time. You can see how Riva performs speech-to-text in different languages with a demo.
  3. Response Generation: The transcription is sent to a large language model (LLM) like Google’s Gemma, Meta’s Llama 2, or Mistral. Riva then uses its neural machine translation to create a natural text response, which is converted into spoken words using Riva’s Text-to-Speech feature.
  4. Facial Animation: NVIDIA Audio2Face (A2F) creates facial expressions that match the dialogue. It animates the avatar’s face, eyes, mouth, and head to reflect the emotions conveyed in the speech. A2F can also infer emotions from the audio directly.

All of this happens in real time, allowing for smooth and natural interactions between players and NPCs. These tools can be customized, giving developers the freedom to create characters that enhance storytelling and world-building in their games.

Ready to Roll

Ubisoft demonstrated their latest research with NEO NPCs, which can interact in real time with players, their surroundings, and other characters.Demos highlighted their ability to understand their environment, respond instantly, and remember past interactions, showcasing how they can enhance game design and immersion.

Ubisoft’s narrative team used Inworld AI technology to create two NEO NPCs, Bloom and Iron. These characters have detailed backstories, knowledge bases, and unique ways of conversing. They also react to their environment and interact with players using Inworld’s AI models. NVIDIA’s Audio2Face (A2F) provided real-time facial animations and lip-syncing.

At GDC, Inworld and NVIDIA presented a demo called Covert Protocol, featuring NVIDIA ACE and the Inworld Engine. In this demo, players took on the role of a private detective, making decisions based on conversations with NPCs. The demo showcased advanced AI-driven interactions, allowing for deeper social simulation and narrative developments.

Convai’s latest NVIDIA Kairos tech demo, displayed at CES, also featured improvements in NPC interactivity. Using Riva ASR and A2F, NPCs could converse with each other, interact with objects, and help guide players through the game world, making for a richer and more immersive experience.

Digital Characters in the Real World

The technology behind creating NPCs is also being adapted for avatars and digital humans beyond gaming, moving into fields like healthcare and customer service.

At GTC, NVIDIA teamed up with Hippocratic AI to demonstrate a generative AI healthcare agent.

Hippocratic AI’s initial focus is on managing chronic conditions, wellness coaching, health assessments, and patient follow-ups.

By integrating NVIDIA’s A2F microservice with its own Synanim ML technology, UneeQ creates highly realistic avatars for better customer interaction.

AI in Gaming

NVIDIA’s ACE is part of a broader suite of technologies that elevate gaming experiences:

  • NVIDIA DLSS uses AI to boost frame rates and improve image quality on GeForce RTX GPUs.
  • NVIDIA RTX Remix helps modders capture game assets, enhance them with AI, and create impressive RTX remasters with full ray tracing and DLSS.
  • NVIDIA Freestyle, available through the NVIDIA app beta, allows users to customize the look of over 1,200 games with real-time filters and features like RTX HDR and RTX Dynamic Vibrance.
  • NVIDIA Broadcast transforms your space into a home studio with AI-powered tools for voice and video, including noise removal, virtual backgrounds, and automatic framing.
